Summer Highway Safety Tips

The summer driving season is nearly upon us, which means that many of us hit the highway or the busy interstates for some fun and adventure. Remember that the nice weather means that the roadways will be more crowded than ever, and the need for safe driving becomes even more important.

Here are some summer highway safety tips from the American Red Cross:

• Be well rested and alert.
• Wear your seatbelt.
• Slow down and obey the speed limit.
• Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
• Avoid distractions, such as cell phones, playing with the radio or eating.
• Make frequent stops during long trips, and share driving responsibilities.
• Be respectful of other motorists and follow the rules of the road.
• Keep a safe distance between you and other vehicles.
• Clean your headlights, taillights, signal lights and windows regularly.
• Turn on your headlights as dusk approaches or in inclement weather.
• If you have car trouble, pull off to the side of the road.
• Stay on main roads and highways if you are in an unfamiliar area.
• Use defensive driving techniques.

In addition, remember these following tips for longer trips:

• Be aware of road and weather conditions before you head out.
• Map out your route before you leave.
• Take advantage of rest areas for restrooms, vending machines, phones, maps and more.
• Check your car’s fluids, tire pressure, wipers and other mechanicals before you head out.
• Keep your gas tank at least half full.
• If you break down, pull off the road as far as you can and turn on your flashers.
• Only exit the vehicle from the passenger’s side, away from traffic.
• If someone stops to help, keep your doors locked, crack a window, and ask them to call law enforcement for help.
• Pack emergency water and food supplies.
• When stopping for restroom breaks, never let children go into restrooms alone.
• Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you expect to arrive.
